Germantown

Families with children have to appreciate the quality of public education in Germantown. Shelby County Public Schools consistently helps students explore their academic and athletic potential. Local schools have an enviable record of excellent standardized test scores, plus a dedicated group of active parent volunteers. The nine campuses within city limits serve a total student population of almost 10,000.

High school graduates also have nearby options for continued education. Southwest Tennessee Community College has two campuses within 15 miles of Germantown. The University of Memphis, home to a full-time enrollment of 15,000, is also located within 15 miles.

Another pleasing lifestyle aspect of Germantown is its dedication to the arts. In the 1990s, the community rallied to bring a world-class concert hall to Germantown. The result of these efforts was the 1994 opening of the Germantown Performing Arts Centre. In addition to hosting big-name talent, the centre provides an ongoing home for the IRIS Chamber Orchestra, Germantown Symphony Orchestra and other live music, dance and family events.

Germantown hosts two main community events each year. At the Germantown festival, visitors can enjoy arts and crafts activities, carnival games, food, live music and the annual dachshund race. The other event, Germantown Charity Horse Show, has been a staple of the community since 1947. Over the course of several days, equestrians of many disciplines have the opportunity to compete. Spectators come from miles around to see hunters, jumpers, American Saddlebreds, Tennessee Walking Horses, Hackney ponies and more show off their talents in the arena.
